Newcastle travel to Eastlands today hoping to put a string of poor league results behind them. Since the fantastic 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa, the magpies have only picked up 1 point in their following 4 matches since then and ominously failing to take points off more lowly teams such as Blackpool and Stoke. They will however have the victory over Chelsea to point to for proof of the ability of the team but so do Manchester City who beat the league leaders 1-0 last week and they achieved it against a string Chelsea outfit than the one that was put out in the Carling Cup match that Newcastle won.
City will have to play without their Argentine midfielder Pablo Zabaleta who suffered a hamstring strain in the Juventus match and so players Dedryck Boyata or Joleon Lescott will have to deputise. David Silva, James Milner and Nigel de Jong will all be hoping for a spot in the team tomorrow as all three were rested in the Juventus match and they all gave stellar performances in the victory over Chelsea last week.
Another city player will be anxious to start and that being Adam Johnson who followed Newcastle as a youngster and will relish a run out against his idols. Johnson scored City's goal in the 1-1 draw with Juventus and will be looking to stake more of a claim in the team in the match today. He said: "I was at Newcastle when I was a kid from 10-12 before I went to Middlesbrough. So I grew up supporting Newcastle and David Ginola and players like that. It's fantastic to playing against north-east teams. These are the type of games I want to be playing in."
For Newcastle defender Sol Campbell is fresh again after a thigh problem that emerged on his debut for the club in the famous win at Chelsea. Other injuries for Newcastle include Danny Guthrie (knee) and Danny Simpson (ankle), but both are expect back in the week to play for the reserves, Steven Taylor (shoulder) is expected in 2 weeks time and Steve Harper (shoulder) and Dan Gosling (knee) are long term injury layoffs.
Newcastle boss Chris Hughton watched the City europa league tie with Juventus and knows his opposite number has plenty of riches at his disposal. He said: "They are a team full of quality. You look at the bench they had and perhaps even more so, look at the players who didn't even make the bench.''
