Champions Rangers will be looking to spark a good start to the season with a win at St Johnstone on Saturday. Last week they suffered a disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Hearts and newly installed coach Ally McCoist will be wanting to put the Ilbrox faithful at ease, especially after the dismal showing against Malmo on Wednesday night in the champions league qualifiers which saw them lose 1-0. Whilst their european future lies in the balance, with a trip to Sweden next Wednesday, he will desperately want to restore some much needed confidence to his side in the league and get their tails ahead of Celtic as quickly as possible.

Chelsea had a rare trophyless season last campaign and as a result the brutal axe of Roman Abramovich swung down on Carlo Ancelotti's head. He's been replaced with relative unknown portugese coach andre-villas boa and he will be hoping he can help put the Chelsea team back onto championship winning form. The blues went through a rough patch during October, November and December last season which they never recovered from and the new boss will be hoping to instill a new confidence. By contrasty, Stoke had a relatively proud display last season, reaching the FA cup final only to be beaten by a solitary goal from Man City and maintained a comfortable consolidation of their place in the league with a finish in 13th place. They will be hoping to build on thsi in the coming season.

Newcastle 0 Arsenal 0 highlights 13/8/2011

Arsenal had a particularly disappointing term last season after so much promise which preceeeded the season. They started the season strong and at one point seemed to be the main challengers to United's title charge but ended up empty handed for the 6th season in a row. The shock Carling Cup Final defeat to relegated Birmingham the biggest heartache of the season. This season, gunners fans are aching even more for teh team to get some silverware and if the North London club go a 7th season in a row without a trophy is it the end of the road for Arsene Wenger? Newcastle by contrast were satisfied with last season's showing as they comfortably consolidated their position in the premiership after coming up. This season they will be hoping to build on it however.

Wigan escaped relegation by the skin of their teeth last term and will be hoping for a far less stressful and safe end to the end of the term this season. They begin their campaign at the JJB stadium against premiership newcomers Norwich, who themselves will also be hoping to consolidate their position in the premiership this season and avoid a repeat of their 2004-2005 campaign in the premiership which saw them go straight back down the championship after one term. They've plied their trade in the transfer market and got the acquisitions of Anthony Pilkington (Huddersfield, £2m), Steve Morison (Millwall, £2.8m) and James Vaughan (Everton, £2.5m) to help with their exploits this season.

Premiership new boys QPR are back in the top flight after a 15 year absence and will start the campaign against Bolton at Loftus Road. The Londoners finished top of the heap in the championship last term and will be hoping that they can stay up this season and get some good performances in. Bolton after starting very promising last season, slumped and stumbled over the finish line, epitomised by their 4-0 hammering by Stoke in the FA cup semi final. This term Owen Coyle will be hoping for more from his team and with the departures of Elmander and Matt Ward, they may struggle to repeat their fine form they had at the start of last season.

Liverpool begin the new campaign against Sunderland at Anfield and will be hoping that King Kenny can build on the finish from last season and onto bigger and better things. Things were looking grim for the Anfield giants last Christmas with Roy Hodgson in charge and hovering just above the relegation places but Dalglish was appointed on Hodgsons sacking and took the club from strength to strength and within one win of a Europa League spot this season which Tottenham grabbed from them at the last moment. Sunderland finished in mid table mediocrity last season in 10th place and will be hoping for an improvement after a promising start last season.
